FIRST

History

FIRST in an organization founded by revolutionary inventor Dean Kamen to excite young people about careers in science and technology fields.  FIRST has matured a lot since the first FRC season 20 years ago.  Growing from 28 high school teams in 1992  to over 15,000 today (comprised of high school level FRC and FTC as well as junior high aged FLL).

FIRST in Michigan

Team 548 is proud to be in Michigan, the engineering center of the United States.  This distinction has brought Michigan FIRST teams some unique benefits. Starting during the 2009 season Michigan was selected to pilot a district program.  Under this program teams, rather than attending a few regional competitions where they would only play a few qualification rounds Michigan teams attend a few district competitions where they get more field-time.  After district competitions are over the top ranking teams are invited to the state championship where they battle for the right to attend the national competition in St. Louis.

The Season

Each year in early January teams of high school students around the world are given a challenge.  From the time it is released they have 6 weeks to design and fabricate their own unique solution to the problem with the assistance of mentors, teachers and engineering professionals.  After this “build season” teams gear up for an additional six weeks of intense competition.  Only the best creations will move on to the national competition in St. Louis.
